Nothing screams mental instability and chaos in a home more than a disorganized, haphazard closet; rammed full of clothing and other items, it requires effort to find what to wear each day, and is something of an eyesore.
If this describes your closet, here are some steps you can take to organize it better and make it more accessible:
Take everything out of it
It may not be a task you relish, but if your closet is ever to be better organized, you’ll need to sort through everything in it, by taking it all out.
Once you have it all laid out in front of you, try to arrange the items in piles, such as clothing in one, shoes in another, accessories somewhere else etc.
Choose which items you want to keep
Take a good, long look at each item of clothing and decide whether you still want to keep it. If you haven’t worn something in months, or it doesn’t fit, consider gifting it to someone, selling it online, donating it to your local thrift store, or recycling it. then, do the same with any other items you might happen to be storing in your closet. If you don’t use them, or look at them often, would they be better off stored in a box and left in the basement or garage, for example? Or do you even need them?
If your closet is very cluttered and crammed full of items, try to be as ruthless as possible about what you keep, and what you don’t.
Choose which clothes you will put in storage
Obviously there are certain times of the year in which some clothing items aren’t worn, and if it’s summer, for example, you won’t be wearing your winter clothes until temperatures drop later in the year; but you’ll still need them one day. These items could be stored away in a separate section of your closet, or in a chest of drawers, making more space for the clothes you’re likely to wear now.
Give it a good clean
Even though you may keep your closet doors closed, some dust and fibers are bound to accumulate over time. Grab a vacuum cleaner and eliminate any cobwebs and dust that might be there, before running a microfiber cloth over all exposed surfaces.
Start organizing the contents
Hanging clothes leaves more space for items such as shoes and accessories, and makes it easier to select an item to wear. Those items that can’t be hung should be neatly stored so that they are easy to access.
Think about how the inside of your closet looks
While it might only be you that ever looks inside your closet, if you were to see it in a tidy and organized state, you might feel more enthused about picking an outfit, or have more confidence about the clothes you plan to wear.
Cleaning and organizing your closet properly does take a little time, but it’s absolutely worthwhile it. Helping you see what you’ve got, select outfits with ease, and avoid spending money on additional clothing because you forgot what was even in your crowded closet, closet organization is something we can all benefit from, we just need to set aside some time to do it.
